Sodium hypochlorite, NaOCl, is an air-unstable,pale green crystalline solid that is soluble in cold water, decomposes in hot water, and has a sweet aroma. It generally is available in one of two strengths. The household liquid bleach contains about 5.25 wt% NaCIO. The commercial product(sometimes called 15% bleach) contains 150g/L available chlorine.

Product Usage

Sodium hypochlorite is a highly effective, broad-spectrum strong oxidizing disinfectant. In water treatment, it is widely used for sterilization and disinfection of drinking water, swimming pools, and industrial recirculating cooling water, quickly killing bacteria, viruses, and algae. In household cleaning, it is the main active ingredient in bleach disinfectants (e.g., "84 disinfectant"), used for bleaching and disinfecting surfaces, fabrics, and tableware. In the paper and textile industries, it serves as a bleaching agent for pulp and fabrics to remove colored impurities. Additionally, it is used in wastewater treatment for the oxidative removal of ammonia nitrogen, sulfides, and other harmful substances, and is effective in odor control. Its advantages include low cost, ease of use, and strong bactericidal efficacy, but care must be taken due to its corrosiveness and the risk of decomposing to release toxic chlorine gas when in contact with acids.
